Tomorrow is Day 1 of my second year of Law School. I have spent the weekend getting organised and have made a solid start on the reading for week 1. However some thoughts already…

Where have I been the last 7 years?

Back in 2015 Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten came together and established the Referendum Council, seeking progress towards the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our Constitution. In 2016 a discussion paper was released. In 2017 a First Nations Constitutional Convention was held near Uluru. The Uluru Statement was read. The Uluru Statement called for a national process of Treaty and Truth-Telling overseen by a Makarrata Commission, along with a constitutionally enshrined voice to the parliament. Makarrata is a Yolngu word approximating the meaning of “treaty” Recommendations were made. In 2018 Morrison became PM and was returned in 2019. In 2019 the Morrison Government signaled an intention to hold a referendum in their first term. That first term is almost over.

The Uluru Statement was awarded the 2021 Sydney Peace Prize.

On 21 December 2021 the Indigenous Voice Co-design Process Final Report was released. “The Government will now commence discussions with States, Territories and local governments to encourage participation in Local & Regional Voice arrangements, and appoint an establishment group to work government on implementation of Local & Regional Voices.”

The only recommendation in that report regarding constitutional recognition is “Note the support for the enshrinement of the Indigenous Voice in the Constitution that was expressed particularly through the submissions received as part of the consultation process.”

Note.

Fiona Lowe’s latest offering transports you directly to Tasmania’s North-West. As a regular traveller to the area, and having close family connections to that region I felt like I was right there and part of the community. This is due to Fiona’s ability to describe the scenery and characters in an engaging way, without the descriptions being too ornate and distracting from the narrative.

I love the way that Fiona tackles contemporary issues in our society. Often I find myself consuming other media in parallel with my reading of Fiona’s novels, as usually the societal issues her characters face I have not have much exposure to. In A Family of Strangers issues faced by characters include alcoholism, bullying, gaslighting, sexuality, miscarriage, sexual harassment and more.

Addy Topic has returned to her hometown of Rookery Cove, Tasmania after many years on the mainland. In the time since she left her hometown her parents have passed away and her return to the small town brings up some memories from her past she may have preferred to leave there.

Steph Gallagher and her husband and small son have recently moved to Rookery Cove, and  finding what was meant to be a fun seachange a more challenging move than she had hoped for.

Brenda Lambeck is widowed with three grown up children. Her relationships with her family and others in Rookery Cove are explored.

The title A Family of Strangers is perfect for this interesting set of characters. The three women come together as part of a choir, and I think this shows that a family can be much more than your blood relatives. Community groups are a fantastic way to meet people, particularly in rural areas, and the community choir in this novel shows the importance of those connections.

I think Fiona’s life experiences in the health industry, together with her research skills and her compassion shine through with the sometimes difficult scenarios her characters find themselves facing.

While I read an advanced reading copy of this edition, I will likely also purchase the audiobook. I have used Fiona’s audiobooks in the past, and the narrator Rebecca Macauley does a great job of them.

We walked 40km…in one day!!

To read about the background of participating in this event, please visit my previous blog post.

Basically we were going to do it in 2020, but COVID-19 meant the event was cancelled/postponed. And we were then able to participate in 2021 (in between further lockdowns). In fact, as I write this on 2nd June 2021, we are in our fourth COVID-19 lockdown!!

So, just popping in to say. My friends are better than yours! So bloody proud of these guys, and the 26km team members who were gone by the time we finished.

Massive effort through some tough terrain. Thanks @surfcoasttrek for putting on such a well run event.
Massive thanks to our personal support crew Joe Amelia and Archie, top work from these guys 👏

Moscow Mules & Murder by Quinn Avery is a very enjoyable read.

I really liked the characters. The protagonist Zoey was relatable and likable. The story itself was simple and a bit predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. I would definitely read further stories featuring these characters.

Thie book is Book 1 of the Tiki Trouble Cozy Mystery Series.

This book has been on my TBR list for a while now. I listened to the audio version, which was narrated by the author herself.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what a 20-year-old feminist could teach me about life, so listened to the book hesitantly.

The author has wisdom beyond her years, and though I am twice her age, I finished the book feeling like I had learned a lot.

This is the book I wish I had when I was a teenager, and I will be encouraging my teenage niece to read it.

The book is short, but definitely thought-provoking. It’s a good jumping-off point into feminist reads, particularly for younger readers.

The Sister-in Law review

The Sister-in-Law by Pamela Crane is a story of intrigue until the very last page. I finished this book in only a few days, and found myself looking forward to picking it up again to continue the read.

Middle-aged Harper is the sister of Lane, a mother, and a recent widow. Her life is falling apart, having suffered the loss of one of her children and then soon after her husband in an apparent suicide.

Harper and her two children move into Lane’s house, where he is living with his wife of only a few weeks. A wife that Harper had no knowledge of, even though Harper and Lane are very close siblings.

The family dynamics are uneasy and there is animosity between the two women competing for Lane’s attention and affections.

As they saying goes… “you can choose your friends, but not your family!”

This book will be available in April 2021 and is an enjoyable read.

The latest offering from Rachael Johns is a delightful read that takes you on an exciting adventure to New Orleans. You almost feel like you’re right there, with the delicious descriptions of Creole and Cajun foods, jazz music and the night life.

We follow our protagonist Flick from Western Australia to the American South. In the past few years, Flick has endured an unconventional marriage breakup, her two children have grown up and moved out. She is no longer the mother and wife that she was a few short years ago.

After seeing an opportunity advertised on Facebook to manage a business in New Orleans for a few months, Flick seizes the opportunity and escapes to New Orleans.

Just as Flick is finding her way in a new country and new city, her daughter Zoe lands on her doorstep with a broken heart.

New Orleans provides the girls with opportunities to move onwards and upwards, but not without some hiccups along the way.

Another enjoyable read from Rachael Johns.

Today’s advice is around keeping hydrated
It is super important to be and stay hydrated for the Surf Coast Trek. About 60% of your body is made up of water – so you need to maintain that level.
Water is the best drink. The event organisers tell us we need to have minimum 1L of water with us, in a NOT single-use bottle, which can be refilled at the rest stops. A hydration pack can be useful, but depending on the kind of pack you have you might find it easier to refill a bottle at the rest stops.
There’s a raft of conflicting advice regarding how much water our bodies need and how much water we should drink day to day, but as a guide, one source suggests 0.033ml/kg for an everyday sedentary individual. So, for example, if you weigh 70kg, that equals 2.31 litres of water a day when it’s a normal temperature and you’re not doing any activity. During exercise you are also drinking to replace what you have sweated and urinated. This could be between 400-800mL per hour.
What about electrolytes?
Electrolyte balance is important too. If you are sweating a lot, and only replacing with plain water (or no water at all!) you might find your blood’s sodium levels decrease. You can add electrolyte tablets like hydralyte to your water bottle to address this. These are available at supermarkets and pharmacies.
If you’re worried about being unable to drink because of the lack of toilet stops – don’t be. Here is a list of all the toilets along the route…
Toilet Stops (and official rest stops)
  • Rest Stop 1. Start (Aireys Inlet Reserve)
    Facilities: toilets, water.
  • Rest Stop 2. Urquharts Bluff Car Park (6.8km)
Facilities: toilets, fruit and snacks, water, first aid
  • Additional Toilets – Point Roadknight (11.4km)
  • Rest Stop 3. Anglesea Information Centre Car Park (14.4km)
Facilities: toilets, fruit and snacks, water, first aid
  • Rest Stop 4. Point Addis (23.3km)
Facilities: toilets, fruit and snacks, water, first aid
  • Rest Stop 5. South Side (31.3km)
Facilities: toilets, fruit and snacks, water, first aid
  • Additional toilets – Bells Beach (32.4km)
  • Additional toilets – Bird Rock (35.2km)
  • Additional toilets – Jan Juc (36.2km)
  • Additional toilets – Back Beach (38.9km)
  • Additional toilets – Cosy Corner
  • Additional toilets – Front Beach
  • Final Stop 6. Finish Torquay (40km)
Facilities: toilets, playground, parking, cafes, shops, water, snack, first aid and BBQOver the next few weeks try upping your water intake so you are better prepared to manage it.
